A few pages from Wound Magazine 1 - Nov 2007 |
The first issue of Wound Magazine was published in November 2007, and established the magazine as a distinctive and eclectic fusion of unusual delights. The issue centres around a theme of "Glitter & Doom", interpreted in the broadest sense, and brings together architecture, fashion, art and music with a series of fascinating articles and interviews. The photography and artwork truly makes this publication much more than a "read and discard" magazine, and many readers will, I suspect, find room for it on their bookshelves.
The magazine takes its name from a quote from Robert Frost: “It is absurd to think that the only way to tell if a poem is lasting is to wait and see if it lasts. The right reader of a good poem can tell the moment it strikes him that he has taken an immortal wound, that he will never get over it.” And much of the magazine's content is chosen for its approach to that immortal quality. Cast your eye across the contents and you will see what I mean:
The Music section includes: Uniform, The Sixteens,
Cult With No Name, U R Penetrators, Ulterior, The Music Axis, Babygod, HTRK,
Top 10 from Flatline, Kitten, Erik Stein, Tim Riley, Ben McGregor and DJ1982,
"PastPresentFuturePerfect", Future Brain, and Porl King's project
"miserylab".
The Fashion section features: Hot on the Heels of Love photographed
by Mark Kean; Le Scandale! and Solitaire by Ssam Sung Un Kim;

in my Sobriety by Nari K; All Fall Down by Derrick Santini; Modern

The Art section covers a number of artists with commentary, examples of their work, and interviews with artists. The introductory article, "Anita mon amour" (the Anita being Anita Berber) is followed by sections featuring Espira, Jennifer Martin, Karen Tang, Danny Sangra, Yutaka Inagawa, Kyu-Sung Jo and Sue de Beer. Ken Pratt reviews an installation by Norwegian artist Børre Sæthre and Michael Benson writes about an Iranian art exhibition. Finally, a film review entitled "Snails, Downs Syndrome and Razor Blades" considers the controversial film "What is it?" by Crispin Hellion Glover.
In the Architecture section the commentary traces the Glitter & Doom theme through modern architecture, Kevin Flanagan writes about the Church of San Carlino at the Four Fountains in Rome under the title "Space in Time", and Kirian Hacker considers perspective.
Issue 2 of Wound Magazine is due out in early 2008.
